While Americans enjoy the convenience of apps like Lyft and Uber,
Europeans have embraced another share service app—BlaBlaCar—which pairs travelers together
to save money and lessen the monotony of a road trip. Since 2006, BlaBlaCar has
expanded to eleven different European countries, where consumers can connect
with others in need of affordable transportation or company (users have
profiles with reviews, personal and travel information, and even indicators of
their chattiness—hence the BlaBla). Like Uber and Lyft, BlaBla’s success lies
largely in its low cost, which is often more affordable than public
transportation. In addition, drivers can only charge their companions a fixed
price for gas upfront (from which BlaBla takes its percentage), thereby
eliminating abuse from drivers looking to make a profit as with other share
services. Although BlaBla does not have any plans to expand to the US soon, it
could be a sign of the future for the growing sharing economy
across the globe.

that? In addition to broadening your market, experts at trendreports.com also

I want to urge staff to take lunch either in the office or out, but not with their computers on. Everyone needs a break to revive his or her body and mind.

We all try to inquire about staff's family, friends, or weekend activities. It only costs a few moments to show that not only do we care how they are doing but gives us all license to acknowledge that we all have lives outside our business that are more important than what we do between 9 & 5.

I try to reward suggestions and initiative with small gifts or words of thanks, and publicly acknowledge good ideas at our daily meetings. Offering to get coffee, buy lunch, or even just get a candy bar from the corner store is a daily occurrence by our team. This may be why my diet is constantly thwarted.

Offering flexibility in terms of our work schedule is key: my motto is I don't care how or where the work gets done, as long as it gets done. So hours are flexible when possible and people can work remotely when needed.

We need to acknowledge that people can't be busy every second and require moments of downtime. Whether it's a closed door, headphones to block out other conversations, a silent moment at the desk to deal with all the issues facing us before 9 and after 5, or just getting outside for 5 minutes, we all deserve the chance to mentally and physically recharge and intentionally up our game at work.

Not everyone loves their job but they certainly shouldn't hate it.

Another literary win is in the bag for Benay clients, Tin House and Granta. The O. Henry Prize recognizes great pieces
of short fiction and is “intended
to ‘strengthen the art of the short story and to stimulate younger
authors.’” Tin House has two winners with Kristen Iskandrian’s “The Inheritors”
and Dylan Landis’ “Trust.” Granta has one winner with Mark Haddon’s “The Gun.”

Israel is home to a very unique business, and life-saving
idea. United Hatzalah of Israel is a unique emergency response organization
that has trained volunteers ready to respond at any moment by “Ambucycles.”
These bikes are equipped with various emergency supplies, such as trauma kits
and defibrillators. The “ambucycles” provide not only fast response times, but
also allow the volunteers to be prepared and fully equipped to deal with
emergencies. These volunteers can be doctors, nurses, or paramedics, and are on
call every minute of every day.

This innovative system “draws a virtual perimeter around an incident that is
entered into the system. It then alerts only the medics in a predetermined
radius to the incident.” LifeCompass is a spectacular system with 2,000 members
signed up, ready to be alerted of and respond to any emergencies in their
vicinity.

The goal of the United Hatzalah is not to overstep the local
ambulances and hospitals, but instead, to provide emergency care prior to the
ambulances arrival on the scene. On average, it takes six minutes for an
ambulance to arrive; whereas, it takes the United Hatzalah less than three
minutes. The United Hatzalah use these three crucial minutes to provide
potentially life-saving care to those waiting for help. This “pre-ambulance”
system is genius and effective, having responded to roughly 210,000 emergencies
in one year.

Although a system like this is expensive to operate, any
country would benefit from implementing a “pre-ambulance” response system
similar to the United Hatzalah. There
are many generous people in the world like Mark Gerson, the co-founder of
the Gerson Lehrman Group and philanthropist, who can donate money toward saving
lives. Mark Gerson donates around $1
million a year to the United Hatzalah.

economic downturn, in which the local town developer has left town, leaving the

Ryan seamlessly connected them so that she “rarely had to check back to keep
everyone straight.”

A Family Office is essentially a supercharged Benay for the super wealthy.
Though, not all Family Offices are so extensive.

It probably goes without saying that a Family Office isn't cheap. "Charlie Grace, managing director at the Family Office Exchange, said the annual costs could run from $400,000 for a couple of employees for a $100 million family office - which would be on top of investment management fees - up to $8 million to $12 million per year for 30 or 40 employees at a multibillion-dollar office."

It seems that one of the largest driving factors behind utilizing a Family Office is the emphasis on confidentiality. While all of us cherish our privacy, establishing a Family Office offers protection from filing certain documents with the FCC, hence the greater discretion offered in the creation of such an entity. The other attraction is that Family Offices keep the finances within the family. Their number one concern is the family and their financial security, prosperity and successful financial longevity - all concerns that the wealthy and the hoping to become wealthy share.

In a traditional non-profit organization excess benefits and unrelated business income can be subject to excise tax and ordinary corporate income tax, respectively, and activities not related to an entity's mission could eventually jeopardize the tax-exempt status.

Rather, I'm referring to the "hacking" that is a mindset and term of change that a small group of innovators are implementing, and we should get used to it.

Hacking is essentially changing, revising, and morphing the limits of an idea, item or event into another. The idea of "hacking" something traditional and creating something innovative began with the invention of "hackschooling."

I have never included a video in my postings but you need to watch this TED talk. It explains the idea of "hacking" applied to education - ie, "hackschooling." According to hackschooling.net, "the most innovative entrepreneurs are people who are able to hack the status quo and create something completely new."

So, how can hacking help you achieve your goals? While your ambitions may not necessarily be the same as Logan's, the hacking mindset is definitely one that can be used for any goal.

Hackschooling makes me happy:

Logan LaPlante at TEDxUniversityofNevada

Now I'm not asking you to go reinvent the wheel, but it might be a good time to actively seek out new options, consciously look at things with a new perspective, and work towards a healthier and happier outcome for all.

I've compiled a list of "mind-sets" and actions that can help you and your coworkers a happier and more innovative bunch:

Straley’s bold combination of the Church and State-prison may be viewed by the truly religious as a crime in itself, regardless of his story-line and plot. However, when you add in the fact that this novel is based in a small village in northern Alaska that thrives off of booze and survives off of the antique economy of fishing, readers will begin to realize that this book is more inclined to highlight our human struggles rather than disrespect anyone’s God or Church.

Despite the fact that Straley is not the first nor will be the last to tackle the secularization of our once sacred institutions, Straley is nothing short of brilliant when it comes to making the characters very human, and therefore the story that much more believable. Readers can only hope and pray for a better synthesis of vice and religion, two worlds that may not be that far apart.

You can purchase the book on Soho Press’ website.
On Sunday, there was an article in the New York Times, which hit close to home. As a Millenial who graduated with a Liberal Arts degree, I can sympathize with the trials young people face in the job market. We’re not only competing against each other, but also with those from older generations who were hit by the Great Recession and are thus willing to take an entry-level salary.

Robert Goldfarb, a management consultant for corporations and the author of the aforementioned article, has noted a peculiar bias against the Millenial generation by upper management. He found that many executives are frustrated by their own anecdotal interactions with Millenials and thus transpose these on an entire generation.

For example, executives have told Goldfarb anecdotes such as “’When I was my grandson’s age, I started at the bottom and worked my way up; he’s not willing to do that.’ Or, ‘My daughter majored in philosophy, of all things — how will that get her anywhere?’” Goldfarb explains that even if they don’t have a personal experience, Gen-Yers are usually slumped into the description (the one we’ve heard repeated time and time again) of being self-absorbed and lazy.

“The general message from these leaders is this: More young people would be hired if they had the right qualifications, but too few have the skills and discipline needed to succeed in today’s demanding workplace.”

The Millenials are often slated as the “entitled generation” but are never given the chance to prove themselves as a competent and intelligent bunch. However, most of us are ready to prove ourselves in the work environment. We may appear overeager but that’s certainly better than being apathetic, right?

According to Goldfarb it is. “Rather than waiting for educational institutions or the government to bridge this generation gap, employers should consider accepting some responsibility for introducing young people into the work force.”

Goldfarb explains that hiring and training young people, even those with liberal arts degrees or those who never graduated college, can give employers a leg up when the economy finally rebounds. After all, we are “a population hungry to prove its value.”
You? Of course not, but I'm not only talking about gender or race bias. Biases can be much more nuanced than we think. In fact, they may be so nuanced that we don't even know they exist. According to The Wall Street Journal, we all have biases and they can often subconsciously affect decisions.

Biases we may not detect in ourselves that can affect our attitudes towards others include judgments on how people dress, look, speak, act, smell, sound, or even walk. One might think a quiet individual disengaged or disinterested, while they are actually intensely thinking or contemplating a comment or strategy. Many of us over a certain age may find tattoos, piercings, or other body jewelry surprising to see visible in the workplace while younger generations don't even notice.

Cook Ross, Inc. provides "Unconscious Bias" training for businesses: "For years it has been clear that people make decisions every day that impact some groups more negatively than others: decisions about hiring, about purchasing, about promotions, about job assignments."

Large corporations are catching on - "As many as 20% of large U.S. employers with diversity programs now provide unconscious bias training, up from 2% five years ago." With this upward trend, it's likely that this type of employee training will reach 50% in the next five years.

The take away from all of this is the old adage:

"Judge Not Lest Ye Be Judged."

As a first born daughter whose father was also my business partner and company founder, this article in December’s Atlantic resonated with me.

The article, “How Women Change Men,” reveals a correlation between men’s relationships with women at work based on their personal relationships with women.

For example “male CEOs with firstborn daughters actually pay their employees more, giving female employees the biggest raises.” Furthermore, “Men who have daughters also grow less attached to traditional gender roles…”

You can read the entire article here. Check it out and see if you agree with the findings.
